Terms of Service
Effective: · Last updated:
These Terms of Service (the “Terms”) are an agreement between you and Complex Studios, an independent game studio based in the United Arab Emirates, operated by its founder (“Complex Studios”, “we”, “us”). They cover your Complex account, the Complex Launcher, the games and playtests we deliver through it, and this website (together, the “service”). By creating an account, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the service.
Our Privacy Policy explains what data we collect and how we use it.
In short
- You must be at least 13 years old to have an account.
- The launcher and your account are free. Nothing is for sale.
- Be respectful, do not cheat, and keep your account to yourself.
- Playtests and early versions can be unfinished, and access can end.
- You can delete your account at any time. Your rights as a consumer are not affected.
This summary helps you read the Terms; the full text below is what counts.
Who we are
The service is run by Complex Studios, an independent game studio based in the United Arab Emirates, operated by its founder. You can reach us as described under Contact.
If the founder sets up a company to run the service, we may transfer this agreement to that company. We will tell you before we do, and your rights under these Terms will not be reduced.
Who can use the service
You must be at least 13 years old to create and use a Complex account.
If you are under 18, or under the age of majority where you live, a parent or guardian must agree to these Terms for you, and they are responsible for your use of the service. In the EU, the EEA and the UK, if you are under the age at which you can agree to the use of your data online in your country (between 13 and 16, depending on the country), a parent or guardian must agree.
If we learn that an account belongs to a child under 13, we close it and delete its data.
You may not use the service if the law where you live forbids it, or if we have permanently suspended you, unless we agree.
Your account
- Use a real email address that you can access. The launcher cannot change it yet; contact us if you need to change it.
- One account is for one person. Do not share, sell, lend or trade your account, and do not use someone else’s.
- Keep your password secret. Our staff will never ask for it. We recommend that you turn on two-step sign-in.
- You are responsible for what happens on your account, unless it happens through no fault of yours.
- If you think someone else has used your account, change your password and sign out other devices in Settings > Security and sessions. You can also use the “This was not me” link in a security email.
Using the launcher and our games
The launcher, our games, and the news, art and other material from Complex Studios belong to us or to those who license them to us. They are licensed to you, not sold.
As long as you follow these Terms, we give you a personal, non-commercial, non-exclusive and non-transferable licence to install and use the launcher and the games in your library on your own PCs. We may end this licence as described under Suspension and closing your account.
You may not:
- copy, sell, rent, share or distribute the launcher or our games, except as these Terms allow;
- get around security measures, access controls or playtest restrictions;
- change, tamper with or interfere with the launcher, our games, our servers or the traffic between them;
- decompile or reverse engineer the launcher or our games, except where the law allows it.
Parts of the launcher are open-source software under their own licences. Nothing in these Terms limits your rights under those licences.
The launcher updates itself, and installed games are updated through it. Some updates are needed to keep using the service. By using the launcher, you agree to these automatic updates.
Games, playtests and early access
- A game or playtest may have extra rules. If it does, we show them to you before you install it or join, and they apply together with these Terms.
- Playtest keys are personal: do not sell or trade them. We can revoke a key, a batch of keys or your access to a playtest, for example when keys leak or a playtest ends.
- Playtest and early-access versions can be unfinished, unstable or missing features. Progress and saves can be reset or lost, and a version can be changed or removed.
- What you see in a playtest is confidential only if we tell you so before you join.
- If you send us feedback or ideas, we may use them freely and without paying you.
Rules of conduct
These rules apply to display names, avatars, friend requests, chat and reports. Do not:
- cheat, use bots or automation, exploit bugs, or tamper with game clients, servers or network traffic;
- buy, sell or trade accounts, keys or anything from our games for real money;
- pretend to be a member of our staff or another person;
- harass, threaten or bully anyone, or post hate speech;
- post sexual content involving minors, or any other sexually explicit content;
- spam, scam or phish other players;
- share other people’s private information, such as their address, photos or private messages, without their permission;
- post anything that is illegal where you live or in the United Arab Emirates;
- make false reports or misuse our tools.
We do not read your private chats unless a player reports them, and we do not scan your PC for cheats. We learn about rule breaking from player reports. Automatic protections, such as the chat word filter and limits on failed sign-ins and requests, block some abuse on their own. If we ever add anti-cheat software, we will describe it here and in the Privacy Policy before it is used.
Your content
Your content is what you put into the service: your display name, avatar, chat messages, reports, notes and feedback. It stays yours.
So that we can run the service, you give us a non-exclusive, worldwide and royalty-free licence to store, copy, show and send your content, only as far as needed to run the service, for example to show your avatar to other players and to deliver your messages. The licence ends when you delete the content or your account, except for copies kept in reports, moderation records and backups, as the Privacy Policy explains.
You confirm that you have the right to share what you post. We may remove content that breaks these Terms or the law.
Reports and moderation
Players can report a player from their profile, from chat or from the friends list, for reasons such as spam, harassment, hate, sexual content, scams, cheating, impersonation or an inappropriate profile. Members of our staff review reports themselves. If the chat word filter is switched on, it hides certain words or stops messages that contain them.
To report illegal content, use the Report button or contact us. Tell us where the content is and why you think it is illegal. When you use the Report button, the launcher confirms that your report was sent, and you get a notification if it leads to action. When you write to us, we confirm that we received your notice and tell you what we decided.
If you break these Terms, we may, depending on how serious the breach is and whether it is repeated: remove content, give you a warning, mute you in chat (from 5 minutes to 90 days), suspend your account for a set time or permanently, remove your playtest access, or close your account. We may also act when the law or a lawful order from an authority requires it, including UAE authorities.
When we restrict your account, we tell you the reason and, for a measure with a time limit, when it ends. You can ask us to look at the decision again, as described below. We do not tell a reported player who reported them.
If you think we made a mistake, contact us within six months of the decision and explain why. For a decision made before we published a contact address on this page, the six months start on the day we publish it. A member of our staff will look at the decision again and tell you the result.
Suspension and closing your account
You can stop using the service and delete your account at any time in the launcher: Settings > Account > Delete account. Deletion happens at once and cannot be undone. Our Privacy Policy explains what is deleted and what we keep.
We may suspend or close your account if you seriously or repeatedly break these Terms, if the law requires it, or to protect players or the service. Except in urgent cases, we tell you the reason.
We may stop offering the service or a game. We will tell you at least 30 days before, in the launcher or by email, unless we must stop sooner for legal or security reasons.
When this agreement ends, these parts still apply: the licence for copies of your content kept in reports, moderation records and backups (Your content), Liability, Governing law and disputes and General.
Changes to the service
The service is new, and we keep developing it. We may change, add or remove features for good reasons, such as security, the law, technical needs or game design. Changes come at no extra cost to you. If a change makes the service significantly worse for you, we will tell you in advance, and you can end this agreement by deleting your account.
Prices
Nothing is for sale. The launcher and your account are free. If we ever offer paid features or games, they will come with their own terms (prices, payment, cancellation and refunds), which we will show you before you can buy anything.
If a game has virtual items or currency, they have no real-money value, cannot be exchanged for money and are licensed to you, not sold.
Other companies’ services
Some features use services of other companies, such as Discord status (optional, in Settings > Social and privacy) and the provider that delivers our emails. Their own terms and policies apply to those services, and we are not responsible for them. Links to other websites open only after the launcher asks you.
The service is provided as it is
We work hard to keep the service running and safe, but it is a new service, provided “as is” and “as available”. As far as the law allows, we do not promise that it will always be available, free of errors or suitable for a particular purpose.
Nothing in these Terms affects the rights you have as a consumer under the law of the country where you live that cannot be excluded by contract.
Liability
As far as the law allows, we are not liable for indirect losses, or for loss of profits, business or opportunities, and our total liability to you is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim and 200 UAE dirhams.
Nothing in these Terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, for harm we cause on purpose or by gross negligence, or for anything else the law does not allow us to limit.
If you live in the EU, the EEA or the UK, we are responsible for loss you suffer that is a foreseeable result of our breaking these Terms or of our failing to use reasonable care and skill. The limits above apply only as far as the law of your country allows.
Governing law and disputes
These Terms are governed by the laws of the United Arab Emirates. Disputes will be decided by the courts of the United Arab Emirates.
If you have a problem with the service, please contact us first. Most problems can be solved that way.
If you are a consumer living in another country, for example in the EU, the EEA or the UK, you keep the protection of the mandatory laws of your country, and you can also bring a claim in the courts where you live. If we bring a claim against you and the law of your country requires it, we will do so in the courts where you live.
Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms, for example when the service or the law changes. We publish the new version on this page with its dates. If a change is important, we tell you in the launcher or by email at least 30 days before it takes effect. Changes never apply to the past. If you do not agree, you can delete your account before the change takes effect; if you keep using the service after that, the new Terms apply to you. Small corrections and changes the law requires can take effect sooner. Earlier versions are available on request.
